How to read guitar tabs : The Slide

The slide is a very popular technique that adds a certain feel to a song by connecting two notes.

You can see it in TABs as a straight line linking two and sometimes a slur sign is seen above the straight line.

The straight line can either be upward or downward. An upward line simply means that you slide to a higher fret (e.g. from the second fret to the fourth fret.)

Slide-up

For the above example, begin by playing the first note on the second fret of the 2nd string and then slide your finger to the fourth fret and then play that note by picking the same string again.

A downward straight line means that you slide from that note down to a lower fret (e.g. from the fourth fret to the second fret in the example below.)

Sllide Variations

The Legato Slide

When the straight line between two notes has a slur sign above it, the slide is called a Legato slide. The only difference is that instead of picking the string twice you only need to pick the string once in a Legato slide.

The Decorative Slide

Decorative slides are usually used for adding effects to a song. This type of slide can be seen as a straight just before or after a note. Slide up or down the fret depending whether the line is upwards or downwards. The fret to which you slide to is not important and hence it is not shown in the TAB.
